It might not look like it, but this Zarooq Motors sand racing car is street-legal.
Built in the United Arab Emirates, this sleek but boxy dune jumper has been designed based on lessons learned from decades of Dubai sand racing. You get all of that — and some seriously knobby tires — for a mere $100,000.
Despite its decidedly Middle Eastern origins, the car has been infused with Italian flair, German precision and American raw power. (Zarooq’s words, not mine.)
Underneath its lightweight but incredibly stiff carbon fiber form, the SandRacer is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that can produce either 400 or 500 horsepower — depending how much sand you want to displace.
This two-wheel drive desert demon also features heavy-duty suspension that gives you more than 17 inches of clearance. To put that into perspective, most road-going cars have fewer than five inches of suspension travel.
Designed to be driven on the street, the car offers idiot-proof automatic transmission. That means that you can drive it to and from your house after you give it — and your organs — a healthy thrashing on the dunes.
